How to recognize if your vet loves your dog and his job

    By Dr. Peter Dobias, DVM

Dr. Peter Dobias, DVM has 30 years of experience as a veterinarian. His love of dogs and passion for natural healing and nutrition led him to writing, teaching and helping people create health naturally, without drugs, chemicals and processed food.

I have had an interesting experience that I want to share with you! A few weeks ago, a gentleman contacted us with the intention of offering his new online rehabilitation program for dogs.

Of course, I wanted to talk to him because making our dogs move and feel better is definitely one of the reasons you and I hang out together online. And so we scheduled time to talk this week and finally connected.

Usually, I like to start a conversation with people from the animal healing industry with a question: Why do you do what you do? This question helps me to recognize if people are really passionate about their work or if they don't really like it and work only to make money.

The next thing I like to ask: Do you have a dog?

The two answers I got kind of knocked me off my feet: "Well it is a business to make money!"
and "No, I don't have a dog, my brother in law has a dog and he is fat, he stinks and he is crazy!"

What? X$#%#@$ I didn't know what to say. It was like I dialled into a comedy channel. I often talk with you about choosing the right vets and other service providers and I know it sometimes is not easy.

However, you can understand people really quickly by asking these two questions:

Why do you do what you do?
Do you have a dog? Tell me about him or her.

When you are listening to the answer, look into the other persons eyes and go with your "gut sense" to see if there is a sparkle in their eyes. If you see passion and love, give this person a chance. If the answer is "rather peculiar" or you see no passion or love in the eyes, run!
