How can dogs teach us to be healthier and save the environment

If you are wondering if this article’s title is a typo, it is not. My plan today is to share with you a few thoughts on how dogs can help us solve environmental issues and health care.

What most people worry about

Most people in the world worry about two things - health and finances. You may also be aware that most nations spend more than 50 percent of their national budget on health care costs. Clearly, this means that our health is not only the most valuable personal attribute but it also the most valuable national asset!

The healthier we are, the more funds can be made available for other important causes such as environmental protection, alternative energy projects and addressing poverty and starvation.

Why politicians do not see this connection?

Naturally, the next question is, why are nations not taking disease prevention into consideration as a top priority? The challenge is that it is very rare to see great and influential politicians understand this connection. The other problem is that in most countries, health care research and medical teaching are controlled by pharmaceutical companies, and there are the least interested in developing inexpensive natural treatments that cannot be licensed.

In other words, pharmaceutical and drug companies are only interested in developing proprietary patented drugs and equipment that nobody else can make for years after they are developed.

Are we free to choose what healthcare we use or not?

We live in an age, where many countries’ budgets are strained to the max, some of them are on the verge of bankruptcy while junk food and drug companies are getting greater every year.

At first glance, one could say that most people are free to decide what they eat or what medicine they use for themselves or their dogs. However, medical systems in most countries put very little emphasis on holistic healing and nutrition and do not pay for natural therapies. Sadly, I have seen many medical practitioners putting their patients through a life-long course of side-effects causing drugs such as steroids and anti-inflammatories instead of making a referral. Some of them even ridicule holistic medicine or intimidate their clients to cover up their insecurity.

Do people have enough knowledge to prevent chronic disease?

I estimate that only about 10 to 20 percent of populations has a solid understanding of how to create health and prevent disease. A majority of people still do not understand how seriously a pharmaceutical approach to medicine affects their health, quality of life and longevity or the health of their dogs.

The other serious challenge is the addictive nature of unhealthy foods, which pet food and junk food companies take advantage off.

So how can dogs help us deal with this serious challenge?

I have been fortunate enough to work with dogs for more than 30 years. The average canine life is four to six times shorter than human life. Since switched from the conventional to holistic medical model, my clients spend much less on veterinary care on average and they use less medication. They are buying better pet food, so their dogs are healthier. They have more funds available for holidays with their dogs. They are enjoying life instead of worrying.

I strongly believe that this model can be applied to human health because I have used the holistic healthcare principles in my life.

While aging is a natural process and happens to all of us, I love taking my 14-year-old dog Skai hiking in the Canadian Rockies and my 80-year-old mother on a Safari to Africa. I feel better and healthier now than I was 20 years ago.

I am writing this article with humility that some of us become ill despite doing everything we can. However, I am certain that with these rare exceptions, our health is a result of our choices and time amount of time we invest in it.

For starters, we need to vote for politicians who understand the connection between health and prosperity and perhaps learn about natural healthcare from our dogs.
