Those of you who have been with me for some time know that I love having good conversations with my colleagues in Get to Know Your Vet. Today, I have the pleasure of introducing you to one of my friends and colleagues, an integrated veterinarian, Dr. Nick Thompson.
Nick is not just a northern veterinarian. He is skilled, experienced, and also so much fun!
Whenever I see him lecturing, he doesn't just enter the stage. He comes on dancing, and there are not many of us who could pull it off so well.
In this chapter of Get to Know Your Vet, within the first five minutes we'd already covered hair loss, homeopathy, and whether the universe is a simulation. That's Nick for you.
So Who is Dr. Nick Thompson?
Nick has been practicing veterinary medicine for close to four decades, trained at the Royal School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh, where he combined his veterinary degree with an honours year in pathological sciences focused on immunology.
He went on to train in homeopathy at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital and became certified in veterinary acupuncture through IVAS, long before "integrative vet" was a phrase anyone used. In 1999, he founded Holisticvet, his integrative practice near Bath, England, where he blends homeopathy, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and raw food nutrition with conventional care for dogs, cats, and horses.
He's the founding president of the International Raw Feeding Veterinary Society, co-founded Raw Pet Medics alongside Dr. Conor Brady and Dr. Brendan Clarke.
Away from the clinic, he's currently writing a new book (most mornings starting at 4 a.m.), walking his three dogs at sunrise, and by his own admission, thoroughly enjoying a bag of dried prunes and a couple of episodes of The Rookie before bed.
Here's how our conversation went.
