The Ingredients: What’s Inside
The Ingredients: What’s Inside
TickHex shares the core botanical formula that makes the entire FleaHex line effective, applied here as a direct-to-coat body spray for daily tick and flea protection.
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Neem oil
- Cedar oil
- Rosemary oil
- Tea tree oil
- Lemongrass oil
- Peppermint oil
- Rose Geranium oil
Known for its insecticidal properties, neem oil works in synergy with HEXCalibur to repel ticks and fleas and support the overall effectiveness of the formula.
A non-toxic proprietary blend of certified organic essential oils — lemongrass, cedar, rosemary, tea tree, peppermint, and rose geranium — that makes TickHex stand apart from other natural tick and flea products.
A small amount of emulsifier stabilizes the oil and water droplets in the suspension, ensuring the active ingredient molecules stay evenly distributed throughout the spray.
Enhances the cleansing and deodorizing effect of the spray — leaving your dog's coat smelling fresh after every application.
The Tickhex® Story: Our Journey to a Natural Flea Solution
The Tickhex® Story: Our Journey to a Natural Flea Solution
In 2008, as I started my online holistic veterinary work, we started spending our winters in Maui, Hawaii. It was an escape from endless dark and rainy winters. My online work consumed me, but we still had time for dog walks in pastures for hours, and swimming in the ocean, recharging our depleted vitamin D supplies.
There was just one problem. Hawaii is THE flea capital of the world!
Within days of arriving, Skai — who had never had a single flea in his life — was covered in them. My new friend Gabriella, a master herbalist and organic farmer I'd met at a local yoga studio, was dealing with the same thing. Neither of us wanted to reach for conventional flea products. We both knew what was in them.
So Gabriella started experimenting. She tested herbal formulas and essential oil combinations, refining and adjusting over the course of a few years. I was skeptical at first — I genuinely didn’t believe it was possible to create something natural that would eliminate adult fleas, disrupt the flea cycle, and repel new ones. I was wrong.
Gabriella wasn't thinking about launching a product. But I knew what we had, and I told her: pet parents and their dogs need this. We launched FleaHex together, and Gabriella remains a true partner in this product to this day.
When we were deciding on the name, I told Gabriella: you’re a master herbalist, but you’re also — and I say this with complete admiration — a little bit of a witch. ”Let’s call it FleaHex! She laughed and thought about it for a moment. “It’s got that ‘witchiness’ — it makes me giggle. It’s like a mystical, magical formula that can make a big difference.”
She was right! FleaHex was the perfect name. And the product really does feel a little like magic — though as you’ll see in a moment, the science behind every ingredient is anything but mysterious.
Why TickHex®? The Science Behind the Decision
Why TickHex®? The Science Behind the Decision
In the following section, we briefly cover some of the research on the toxicity of traditional, drug-based flea control products — and why that research led us to create a better alternative.
A report by the NRDC found that the riskiest conventional flea products contain a family of compounds called organophosphates, or OPs. OP pesticides are derived from nerve agents and work by interfering with nerve signal transmission. Because the neurological process they target is shared across species — insects, dogs, cats, and humans alike — they can harm far more than just the fleas.
Over a four-year period ending in 1996, poison control centers logged approximately 25,000 cases of children under the age of six who were exposed to OP pesticides from flea and tick products. Hundreds were hospitalized.
A 2009 NRDC report found that common flea and tick products can expose dogs and children to toxic pesticide concentrations exceeding EPA safety limits by 500 times. In a single year — 2008 — the EPA documented 20,245 reported canine incidents from spot-on products alone:
| Minor Side Effects | Moderate Side Effects | Major Side Effects | Deaths |
|---|---|---|---|
|
15,186 |
4,748 |
144 |
167 |
The EPA study covered the most popular spot-on flea and tick control products on the market and is the only such study ever done to monitor the effects of these drugs on companion animals. This data is publicly available on the EPA's own website. It is exactly why I stopped recommending these products to my patients long before TickHex® existed.
Over 50,000 Percent More Than EPA Recommended Toxicity Levels

A 2009 NRDC report found that common flea and tick shampoos, collars, sprays and dips can expose dogs and children to toxic pesticide concentrations exceeding EPA safety limits by 500 times — 50,000 percent. And in 2021, the NRDC reported that the EPA had received 75,000 incident reports documenting pet harms associated with just one type of flea collar.

How to use TickHex® Body Spray
Use TickHex up to once per day during the tick season, or as needed when exposure to ticks and fleas is likely. . Do not spray in the face. Use prior to walks, especially in tick-heavy areas such as forests and long grasses. Use the body spray as an adjunct to FleaHex Body Wash and Household spray.
Spray on the whole body including the inner thighs and the underbelly in an amount similar to using hair spray. The amount of TickHex used depends on the size of your dog and how often you apply it.
For tick prevention:
- Comb your dog's coat thoroughly before applying.
- Shake the bottle well before use.
- Spray evenly over your dog's entire coat — avoiding the eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Pay special attention to the paws, lower legs, and underbelly. Ticks climb rather than jump, so these areas are the first point of contact.
- Apply before walks, especially in tick-heavy areas like forests and long grassgrass, meadows and trails.
- Ticks may still be active in winter, but typically don't feed when the ground is frozen.
For flea control and prevention
(to be used together with FleaHex Wash and Household Spray):
- Heavy fleas: Apply daily until fleas no longer appear, then once monthly for prevention during flea season.
- Light fleas: Apply daily for one week, then once weekly until fleas are gone..
- Flea prevention: Apply once weekly or less if no fleas are present.
