You washed your dog. The fleas came back anyway.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone — there is just one thing missing. The problem is that by the time you see fleas on your dog, they’ve already set up camp in your home. Flea eggs, larvae, and pupae live in your carpets, bedding, furniture, and anywhere your dog spends time. Washing your dog addresses what’s on the surface. It doesn’t touch what’s waiting to hatch.

This is the part of flea control that is often forgotten. And it’s exactly why FleaHex® Household Spray exists.

“I’ve seen so many dog parents do everything right — switching to natural food, avoiding toxic flea treatments, washing their dogs carefully — and still struggle with fleas. In almost every case, the missing step was the environment. Treat your dog and your home together, and you break the cycle completely. Skip the home, and the flea cycle continues.

— Dr. Peter Dobias, DVM

What It Does: Your Home’s Role in the FleaHex Protocol

FleaHex Household Spray is part of a three-product natural flea control system. While FleaHex Wash eliminates fleas on your dog and disrupts the flea cycle on contact, the Household Spray extends that protection into your dog’s environment — the places where flea eggs and larvae hide between washes.

Used weekly on carpets, bedding, blankets, and furniture for 4 to 6 weeks, FleaHex Household Spray works in sync with the Wash to break the flea cycle completely. Without it, even the most diligent washing routine leaves the re-infestation door open.

A quick note on the name: We understand that “household spray” might sound like something you’d use to clean a countertop. FleaHex Household Spray is nothing like that. It’s made from the same plant-based, certified organic ingredients as the Wash. It’s gentle to use directly on your dog when needed. We call it a household spray because that’s its primary job — but there’s nothing in it that would harm your dog, your children, or anyone else in your home.

The FleaHex® Story: Our Journey to a natural flea solution

The FleaHex® Story: Our Journey to a natural flea solution

In 2008, as I started my online holistic veterinary work, we started spending our winters in Maui, Hawaii. It was an escape from endless dark and rainy winters. My online work consumed me, but we still had time for dog walks in pastures for hours, and swimming in the ocean, recharging our depleted vitamin D supplies.

There was just one problem. Hawaii is THE flea capital of the world!

Within days of arriving, Skai — who had never had a single flea in his life — was covered in them. My new friend Gabriella, a master herbalist and organic farmer I'd met at a local yoga studio, was dealing with the same thing. Neither of us wanted to reach for conventional flea products. We both knew what was in them.

So Gabriella started experimenting. She tested herbal formulas and essential oil combinations, refining and adjusting over the course of a few years. I was skeptical at first — I genuinely didn’t believe it was possible to create something natural that would eliminate adult fleas, disrupt the flea cycle, and repel new ones. I was wrong.

Gabriella wasn't thinking about launching a product. But I knew what we had, and I told her: pet parents and their dogs need this. We launched FleaHex® together, and Gabriella remains a true partner in this product to this day.

When we were deciding on the name, I told Gabriella: you’re a master herbalist, but you’re also — and I say this with complete admiration — a little bit of a witch. ”Let’s call it FleaHex! She laughed and thought about it for a moment. “It’s got that ‘witchiness’ — it makes me giggle. It’s like a mystical, magical formula that can make a big difference.”

She was right! FleaHex® was the perfect name. And the product really does feel a little like magic — though as you’ll see in a moment, the science behind every ingredient is anything but mysterious.

Why FleaHex®? The Science Behind the Decision

Why FleaHex®? The Science Behind the Decision

In the following section, we briefly cover some of the research on the toxicity of traditional, drug-based flea control products — and why that research led us to create a better alternative.

A report by the NRDC found that the riskiest conventional flea products contain a family of compounds called organophosphates, or OPs. OP pesticides are derived from nerve agents and work by interfering with nerve signal transmission. Because the neurological process they target is shared across species — insects, dogs, cats, and humans alike — they can harm far more than just the fleas.

Over a four-year period ending in 1996, poison control centers logged approximately 25,000 cases of children under the age of six who were exposed to OP pesticides from flea and tick products. Hundreds were hospitalized.

A 2009 NRDC report found that common flea and tick products can expose dogs and children to toxic pesticide concentrations exceeding EPA safety limits by 500 times. In a single year — 2008 — the EPA documented 20,245 reported canine incidents from spot-on products alone:

In 2008 there have been 20,245 reported canine incidents:

Minor Side Effects Moderate Side Effects Major Side Effects Deaths

4,748

The EPA study covered the most popular spot-on flea and tick control products on the market and is the only such study ever done to monitor the effects of these drugs on companion animals. This data is publicly available on the EPA's own website. It is exactly why I stopped recommending these products to my patients long before FleaHex® existed.

A 2009 NRDC report found that common flea and tick shampoos, collars, sprays and dips can expose dogs and children to toxic pesticide concentrations exceeding EPA safety limits by 500 times — 50,000 percent. And in 2021, the NRDC reported that the EPA had received 75,000 incident reports documenting pet harms associated with just one type of flea collar.

How to Use FleaHex Household Spray

Step 1 — Wash

Use FleaHex® Wash to thoroughly wash your dog once per week for four to six weeks. Comb and prepare your dog’s coat as you would for any bath. If the coat is very dirty or greasy, wash first with a regular dog shampoo, then apply FleaHex®. Wet your dog’s torso thoroughly with lukewarm water — you won’t need to apply FleaHex® to the head. Work the wash through the coat for a full 10 minutes, adding water as needed to ensure it penetrates down to the skin. Rinse thoroughly. Towel dry or air dry — either is fine and will not reduce the effect.

Step 2 — Clean & Spray Your Home

Vacuum your entire home thoroughly, paying close attention to your dog’s favorite spots. Wash all blankets and bedding on a hot cycle. Spray carpets, bedding, and furniture with FleaHex® Household Spray weekly for four to six weeks. You can also spray the inside of your vacuum bag to prevent re-infestation.

It may take several weeks to see the flea population decline, especially in severe infestations. This is normal — you’re breaking a cycle, not just killing what’s visible.

Step 3 - Spray your dog

Use TickHex® Body Spray ( against fleas and ticks) on your dog between washes, up to once per day during flea and tick season. Do not spray near the face. For complete protection, TickHex® should be used alongside FleaHex® Wash and FleaHex® Household Spray.

FAQs

What is the minimum age I can start using FleaHex on my dog?

Eight weeks is the minimum recommended age.

Can it be used on pregnant or nursing dogs?

FleaHex is safe for pregnant dogs. We recommend avoiding use while your dog is nursing.

Why does it say “household spray” — is it safe to use on my dog?

Yes — and we understand why the name gives pause. Most products labeled "household spray" contain harsh chemicals you'd never put on an animal. FleaHex Household Spray is made from plant-based, certified organic ingredients, and safe enough that it requires no special precautions in your home. In cases of severe infestation, it can also be applied directly to your dog once a week during the first month of use. We call it a household spray because treating your dog's environment is its primary job — but it won't harm your dog, your children, or anyone else who comes into contact with it.

Is it safe around children?

Yes. FleaHex Household Spray is made with certified organic, plant-based ingredients and contains no synthetic pesticides or pharmaceutical compounds. It is safe for use in homes with children and pets.

Can I use the Household Spray instead of the Wash?

They work differently and are designed to be used together. The Wash treats your dog directly — killing adult fleas and disrupting the flea cycle on contact. The Household Spray treats your dog’s environment, where eggs and larvae hide between washes. One without the other leaves part of the cycle unaddressed. For the best results and to qualify for our flea-free guarantee, use both.

How often do I apply it?

Once per week for 4 to 6 weeks during active infestation, then once or twice a month as a preventive depending on the length of flea season in your area. See the usage guide above for full details.

What if FleaHex Household Spray isn’t working?

In more severe flea infestations, it’s possible to see fleas for several weeks before the population declines, especially in severe infestations. Make sure you are vacuuming thoroughly before each application, washing bedding on a hot cycle, and treating weekly for the full four to six weeks. If you’re still seeing fleas after that, email us at customercare@peterdobias.com and we’ll help you troubleshoot or issue a full refund — whichever you prefer.

How long is the product good for?

Although there is no expiry date printed on the bottle, we recommend refreshing your FleaHex supply every two years to ensure full effectiveness, as we don't add any preservatives.

What is the expiry date?

There’s no expiry date printed on the bottle. Because we don’t add preservatives, we recommend refreshing your supply every two years to ensure full effectiveness.

Does it work on other animals?

FleaHex has been developed and tested exclusively for dogs. It has not been tested on cats or other animals, and we don’t recommend using it on other species.

Does FleaHex work on ticks?

While we have seen some promising results, we developed TickHex which is our all-natural spray effective specifically for ticks.
