The SkinSpray Story
By Dr. Peter Dobias
Some of my best childhood memories are of walking through the hills and meadows near my grandfather's home, collecting herbs. He was an accountant by profession, but after he retired, he became a dedicated herbalist — drying herbs on his rooftop, studying their properties, and teaching me about the miraculous healing power of herbs. Those walks, and everything he taught me, stayed with me for life.
When I became a veterinarian, I carried that foundation into my practice. However, what I saw in conventional wound care troubled me deeply. Hydrogen peroxide, toxic chlorhexidine, iodine, antibiotic and steroid creams — these are still the standard tools, and most people assume they are safe. What I've learned, both from research and from my own clinical experience, is that many of them actually impede the healing process. They don't just kill pathogenic bacteria, they disturb the healthy skin microbiome, promote the growth of dangerous superbugs, and also destroy the healthy skin cells that are essential for healing.
I had one case that made this undeniable for me. A client accidentally used undiluted chlorhexidine on a sutured wound. When we removed the stitches two weeks later, the wound completely fell apart. It hadn't healed at all. That experience — and others like it — showed me that chemicals that destroy bacteria also damage the skin cell. We needed a better way.
So in the late ’90s, I went back to my grandfather's books, dove in the research of of herbs known for centuries to support skin healing, reduce pain and calm inflammation. I tested the formula on myself and my family, then our own pets and then introduced it in the practice.
I sometimes joke we test our products on people to make sure they are safe for pets. The final results were much better than expected. Wounds healed faster; cuts, stings and burns were less painful; and inflammation, itching and redness calmed down. Scarring was also reduced.
This is how SkinSpray was born.
I keep several bottles in my home at all times — and I'll be honest, I panic a little when I accidentally leave it behind. A few years ago, a surfboard fin slashed my forehead while surfing. A four inch wound made the trip to the emergency room necessary. The doctor did a great job with the surgery but I was not very happy about the gunky antibiotic cream they applied on the wound afterward.
The moment I got home, I quickly washed it off and used SkinSpray instead. Even I was surprised how quickly the wound healed. I've seen these kind of results so many times before but it still surprised me.
In my clinical experience, SkinSpray can double the speed at which wounds heal. I say that not as a medical claim, but as something I've seen over and over again for many years.
Also, my dog Pax loves to lick SkinSpray if I spray it on my palm. To me, this is the greatest testament of safety as dogs have a natural aversion to chemicals. SkinSpray can be also used for gum healing after dental cleaning, extractions or oral surgery.

Based on European Tradition, Made from the Finest Herbs
SkinSpray contains four powerful herbs that have been used in traditional European herbalism for centuries. Each one brings distinct healing properties to the formula — and together, they create synergy and promote the body's own natural ability to heal.
Calendula The cornerstone of natural wound care. It has been trusted for centuries to speed healing, soothe irritated skin, acne, and calm inflammation. It helps control bleeding, supports healthy tissue regeneration, and brings antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties that make it one of the most versatile healing herbs in existence.
Hydrastis (Goldenseal) is the healing force multiplier of this formula. A powerful natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory, it works to keep wounds clean and infection-free while amplifying the effects of every other herb in the formula. Where antibiotics create resistance, goldenseal supports the body's own defences — working with your biology rather than against it.
Witch Hazel is what gives SkinSpray its immediate soothing effect. Its natural astringent properties reduce swelling, pain, inflammation and bleeding. The discomfort often begins to ease within minutes of application. It also supports soothing and healing of insect bites, bruises, and acne, making it one of the hardest-working ingredients in the bottle.
Yucca has a long history of traditional use for skin lesions, inflammation, and wound healing, and it brings meaningful anti-inflammatory properties to the formula. It helps stop bleeding, supports recovery from sprains and soft tissue injury, and rounds out Skin Spray's ability to address the full range of what happens when skin is damaged — from the moment of injury through to complete healing.
Instructions
Minor Wounds, Cuts, Scrapes, Hot Spots, Abrasions, Diaper Rash, and Sore Nipples:
Rinse the area under a steady stream of lukewarm water or saline solution and dry with clean gauze, and apply SkinSpray directly to the skin. For larger or more painful wounds, you can cover the area with a bandage, and saturate the bandage until SkinSpray reaches the skin. Re-apply every two to four hours and change the bandage at least every 12 hours.
As an alternative for smaller wounds, apply a cloth bandaid on the washed and dried wound, and saturate the bandaid with SkinSpray after. The sequence is important as applying SkinSpray before the bandaid application will make it not stick.
Clean the wound daily, soak off all scabs in the first 3 days or so to prevent the formation of thick scabs that can increase scarring and harbour bacteria. After three days, most wounds are healed enough to allow a thin scab to form.
Continue SkinSpray application several times a day for 3 - 5 days or as needed to complete the healing process.
Deep Wounds, Cuts, and Surgical Incisions
Follow the same rinsing, drying and SkinSpray application steps above. Change the dressing one to two times daily, re-saturating in between as needed to keep the bandage saturated. Clean post-surgical incisions can be treated without a bandage — simply spray liberally two to three times per day.
Fungal Conditions: Athlete's Foot, Ringworm
Apply SkinSpray to all affected areas three times daily until symptoms have been completely gone for at least two weeks.
Important:
Use cloth-based or breathable bandages only — plastic materials are less penetrable and will not allow SkinSpray to reach the skin.
Bonus Tip! What to Do About Scabs
Most people believe scabs protect a healing wound. In practice, a thick scab sits across the wound margins and prevents them from drawing together — slowing healing and increasing scarring. The better approach: Soak the scab off under a gentle stream of lukewarm water and work it away carefully with clean gauze. Once clear, apply SkinSpray and dress as usual. After about three to five days, a thin natural scab may form — at that point it's fine to leave it.
Bee or Wasp Stings
Use along with a few pieces of gauze and Vetrap (sticky bandage) or another type of bandage material. Apply SkinSpray on all the pieces of gauze until it is soaking wet. Secure the gauze to the affected area with Vetrap or a band-aid and spray more solution on every two to four hours to keep it moist.
(Change the bandage daily and keep it on and reapply for a minimum 48 to 72 hours)
It is my experience that the swelling will be minimal with such an approach. This treatment usually works on its own. However, if you or your dog are very sensitive, we suggest you give a dose of Apis 200 C (homeopathic treatment) every four to six hours for the first 24 hours. This remedy is also very good if your dog gets stung in the mouth.
Mosquito Bites
Spray the affected itchy skin every few hours for as long as needed.

FAQs
Why do you call it SkinSpray? I've seen it referred to as Healing Solution.
SkinSpray was originally called Healing Solution — a name that reflected exactly what Dr. Dobias set out to create. Regulators eventually required a name change, so SkinSpray it became. Dr. Dobias still calls it Healing Solution privately, and frankly, so do many of our longest-standing customers. The name changed. The formula didn't.
How does SkinSpray work?
SkinSpray is made of four herbs — calendula, goldenseal, witch hazel, and yucca — that work together to support the body's own natural healing process. Rather than killing bacteria indiscriminately the way chemical disinfectants do, SkinSpray promotes healthy cell growth, reduces inflammation and swelling, soothes discomfort, and helps keep wounds clean without damaging the tissue that is trying to heal. It works with your biology, not against it.
Does SkinSpray expire?
SkinSpray does not carry a printed expiry date, but we recommend refreshing your supply every two years to ensure full effectiveness. Because we manufacture in small batches, the bottle you receive is always fresh. For best results and maximum shelf life, store your SkinSpray in the refrigerator and shake vigorously before each use.
Is SkinSpray just for dogs, or can I use it on myself?
SkinSpray was designed for both people and animals from the very beginning. Dr. Dobias developed it in his veterinary practice, tested it on his own family, and has used it on himself for decades. Many of our customers keep a bottle in their own medicine cabinet alongside their dog's first aid kit — and plenty of them tell us they end up using it on themselves just as often. It is safe for all animals and people.
Can SkinSpray be used inside my dog's ears?
SkinSpray can be used on wounds on or around the ear, but it is not a treatment for ear infections. Ear infections need to be addressed internally by identifying and treating the underlying cause. Use SkinSpray around the ear with care — over-cleaning the ear canal can cause its own problems. Click here for more info on ear infections
Can SkinSpray be used on my dog's nose?
Yes, but spray it onto a cotton pad or clean gauze first and apply it that way rather than spraying directly at your dog's face. This prevents the product from reaching the nostrils or eyes. Note that a persistently dry crusty nose, bleeding skin eruptions or scabs are usually a sign of a deeper systemic issue that needs to be addressed. Skin Spray can be beneficial but there are other aspects of your dog’s condition that need to be addressed.
Can SkinSpray be used in the mouth or around the eyes?
SkinSpray is safe to use on gum tissue — for example, after a dental procedure for your dog or yourself. Apply via soaked gauze rather than spraying directly. It is also safe to use around the eyes, again applied via soaked gauze rather than sprayed directly. Do not spray into the eyes themselves.
The label mentions caution for dogs with liver disease. Should I be concerned?
The caution on the label relates specifically to the witch hazel ingredient, which in very large quantities taken orally could theoretically affect liver or kidney function. The amount of witch hazel in SkinSpray is very small, and the product is intended for external use. The warning is a regulatory requirement, not a reflection of any real risk at normal usage levels. We are very confident in both the safety and effectiveness of SkinSpray.
Does SkinSpray contain alcohol? Will it sting?
The tinctures used to make SkinSpray do contain alcohol, but it is largely evaporated during the manufacturing process to prevent stinging. The final product contains only trace amounts — specifically to ensure it does not sting when applied to an open wound, and to make it safer for pets. You can apply it directly to broken skin with confidence.
The label also says "not intended for long-term use." What does that mean?
This language is now required by government regulations in the US and Canada for all natural health products — it is not specific to SkinSpray and does not reflect our assessment of the product's safety. We are very confident in SkinSpray and stand behind it completely with our lifetime money-back guarantee.
How long does it take for a dog’s incision to heal?
Most uncomplicated surgical incisions in healthy dogs start sealing within a few days and are often well healed on the surface by 10–14 days, but deeper tissue strength continues to develop for weeks. General veterinary data suggest that more complex or infected wounds can take several weeks or longer, especially if your dog is older or has other health issues.
How should I clean my dog’s incision at home?
Dr. Dobias recommends rinsing the incision with a gentle stream of body-temperature or slightly colder water to remove discharge, then using saline to finish the rinse if needed. Scabs should be softened and removed with gauze so only the wound margins and stitches remain visible, which helps prevent trapped infection and promotes healthy healing.
Can I use hydrogen peroxide on my dog’s wound or incision?
Dr. Dobias advises against using hydrogen peroxide because it can damage healthy tissue and delay healing, even though it kills some bacteria. Instead, he recommends thorough rinsing with water or saline, followed by SkinSpray and appropriate bandaging when needed.
What natural product does Dr. Dobias recommend for wound and incision care?
Dr. Dobias uses his herbal SkinSpray as the primary topical for wounds, hotspots, cuts, insect bites, and even surgical incisions. It can be sprayed directly on the cleaned wound and used to soak gauze dressings that are changed once or twice daily.
How do I stop my dog from licking or scratching the wound?
In addition to using bandages where appropriate, Dr. Dobias suggests covering paw bandages with booties or bags outdoors and checking the wound regularly to ensure it stays clean and dry. Guardians can also use protective collars or soft alternatives and provide mental enrichment and calm companionship to reduce stress-driven licking.
